Antics in the Algarve: A Place for Discovery

The Algarve may well be a path well worn by the crocs of mass tourism these days, but it’s also a land ripe with history and culture. Step back into a landscape carved in Neolithic times, where the ancient stones of Vila do Bispo give a clue to the regions’ ancestral way of life, then follow in the tracks of Roman sandals on the road to Sagres.

The remains of Roman baths and salt fishing tanks can still be explored around the thronging tourist hotspots of Vilamoura and Praia da Luz today. The Moorish influence, dating back to the 8th century invasion, has left an indelible mark on the region’s architecture and culture, as has Portugal’s far-reaching colonial heritage in more recent centuries. From the colourful local place names, to the many legends, local festivals and regional rhythms and songs, each has a story to tell.

Da Balaia Resort

Our luxury, all inclusive Algarve resort Club Med Da Balaia stands proud atop a deep-red cliff, overlooking magnificent stretches of white sand. The Algarve is firmly established as a prime golfing destination of course, so you can expect your all-inclusive Club Med holiday to deliver on this front. Perfect your swing at the Golf Academy on site, or at one of 30 or so prestigious courses dotted about the region.

Back on site, you can enjoy authentic exemplary Portuguese cuisine or relax at the Club Med Spa by Cinq Mondes. Your children will never tire of Da Balaia, thanks to the raft of fun activities they can get involved with at our Baby Club Med and Petit Club Med programmes.

Don’t be surprised to hear the odd smattering of French on site, by the way. Many of our resort staff speak French as their first language. In fact, if you don’t fancy venturing far from the resort, you may actually hear more French than Portuguese during your stay!

The Resort has enjoyed something of a makeover recently. Its new look, courtesy of designer Didier Gomez, reinforces Da Balaia’s pervasive atmosphere of serene well-being. One great example of this is the restaurant, with vast windows flooding the dining areas with light on the many long summer days. A brand new lounge around the swimming pool also helps bring a sense of fun to proceedings too.

Out and about

If you want to stretch your sea legs a little, you’re spoilt for choice with our range of discovery excursions. Explore the historic centres of Sagres and Lagos on day trips, or branch out a little further to discover the vibrant cities of Lisbon, Faro or even Seville.

An outing aboard a small fishing vessel is perhaps the perfect way to appreciate the sheer beauty and variety of caves hollowed out by the ocean found between Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro. Here you’ll get to marvel at some incredible rock formations and the beautiful effects the light plays upon them.

You can also discover this natural wonder on board a catamaran, which will take you as far along the coast as Gale. For an even more leisurely day trip, spend a full day on one of our Finismar Yachts, taking in the Atlantic Coast before enjoying a barbeque of local specialities on the beach.
