Even without the addition of mistletoe, winter is one of the most romantic times of the year. Frosty walks, curling up in front of the fire and spending as much time together as possible are just a few of the best festive perks. But what if you want to really escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life? Well, you could always spend Christmas abroad!

The world is full of spectacular destinations that are perfect for a romantic winter getaway. Whether you’d prefer to stay close to home, or flee the rat race somewhere further flung, we have a suggestion to suit both you and your partner down to a tee.

Venice, Italy

Once Venice’s summer season has ended, the crowds dissipate along with the intense heat, leaving behind an intimate city free from busy streets full of people. Stroll by the water, hand in hand, and marvel at the wealth of museums and galleries, and dine on Italian delicacies in quiet, cosy restaurants. Magnifico.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Cosy and charming, Copenhagen is a fantastic couple’s retreat. Lose track of time by exploring the city’s winding cobbled streets, ducking into achingly stylish interior shops and sampling authentic Danish rye bread. Visiting Copenhagen during winter also means something extra special: the Tivoli Gardens Christmas market. It won’t take long for the twinkling fairy lights, festive music and eclectic stalls to steal your heart.

The French Alps

What could be more romantic than brilliant white snow as far as the eye can see? From Chamonix to Val Thorens, the French Alps are the perfect spot for a winter break, just the two of you. Feel your stresses melt away as you relax in a sauna, and rediscover your sense of adventure during a day out on the slopes. The only trouble is, in a landscape dominated by beautiful mountains and scenic forests, you could find yourselves trapped in a love triangle with this stunning part of the world.

Hokkaido, Japan

If you can’t resist challenging one another on the slopes, you’ll find it hard to resist Hokkaido. Japan may not be known for its skiing, but the country’s most northerly island has snow in abundance. A unique experience, Hokkaido’s après ski is more about comforting Japanese tea and traditional cuisine than wine and waffles; perfect if you’re seeking a more tranquil snowy retreat.

Cancun, Mexico

If you’re both in need of some sun, head to the pristine beaches of Cancun. Grab a surfboard and take advantage of the calm winter waves – after all, you can’t truly appreciate that gorgeously turquoise water when you’re trying your hardest to stay upright! If surfing isn’t your sport, you can always don some scuba gear and explore the area’s reefs, before visiting an awe-inspiring ancient Mayan temple.

Gasfinolhu, the Maldives

Peace, tranquillity and privacy: Gasfinolhu’s couples-only eco villas offer intimacy like nowhere else. Elevated on struts over the crystal-clear ocean, the Finolhu Villas offer the kind of retreat that dreams are made of. With year-round sun and blissful temperatures, you can while away your days relaxing on the beach and marvelling at the abundance of vibrant wildlife, all before letting the sound of the ocean lull you both to sleep.

Lapland, Finland

Home to some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, magical activities and, of course, the breath-taking Northern Lights, Lapland is a couple’s paradise. Dash through glistening forests on a sled pulled by beautiful dogs, meet herds of gentle reindeer and snuggle up under layers of thermals to watch the natural light show above. You’ll forget there was ever anyone else on Earth, except for you and your loved one.

We all need a break during winter: time to recharge our batteries and spend quality time as a couple after months of professional commitments. Ripe with romance and memorable experiences, these winter retreats offer an escape from the daily grind you’ll never forget.
